3.) HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Emergency Overview: California Proposition 65 requires us to inform you that Barium Chromate contains hexavalent chromium. Hexavalent chromium is on the California Governor's list, "Chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity." Use care when handling this chemical. This information must be included in all M.S.D.S.'s that are copied and distributed for this material.
Potential Health Effects: Irritating to the skin and eyes on contact. Inhalation will cause irritation to the lungs and mucous membrane, vomiting, violent diarrhea, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, slow pulse, irregular heartbeat, sore throat, coughing, possible liver damage, and bleeding and ulceration of nasal septum.. Irritation to the eyes will cause watering and redness. Reddening, scaling, and itching are characteristics of skin inflammation. Inhaling large doses will cause cardiac and respiratory failure, and hemorrhages in the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys. Follow safe industrial hygiene practices and always wear protective equipment when handling this compound.
4.) FIRST AID MEASURES
Inhalation: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Call a physician immediately.
Skin Contact: In case of contact, flush skin with water. Wash clothing before reuse. Call a physician if irritation occurs.
Eye Contact: In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician.
Ingestion Contact: If swallowed, call a physician immediately. Remove chromates from stomach by gastric lavage.
