  EINECS PERCENT CAS NO:
Ammonium Thiocyanate 1792-95-4
3.) HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Emergency Overview: Causes respiratory tract irritation. Causes eye and skin irritation. Contact with acids liberates toxic gas. May be harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Hygroscopic (aborbs moisture from the air). Target organs: Respiratory system, eyes, thyroid, skin.
Potential Health Effects: Eye: May cause moderate eye irratation. Skin: Causes skin irratation. May be harmful if absorbed through the skin. Ingestion: Harmful if swallowed. Causes gastrointestinal irratation with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. May cause agitation, delerium, convulsions, low blood pressure, anxiety and even unconsciousness and death. Inhalation: Causes respiratory tract irratation. May be harmful if inhaled. Chronic: Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis. Chronic exposure may cause thyroid damage: thyroid enlargement, decrease in metabolic rate, and hypothyroidism. Repeated exposure can cause headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and weight loss.
4.) FIRST AID MEASURES
Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artifical respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Skin Contact: Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Ingestion Contact: Call a poison control center. If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Note to physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.
5.) FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Extinguishing Media: Use water spray, dry chemical, "alcohol resistant" foam, or carbon dioxide.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures:
Fire and Explosion Hazzards:
Hazardous Combustion Products:
Protective Measure in Fire: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irratating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion.
6.) ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Personal Precaution in Spill: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in section 8.
Environment:
Spill Clean Up: Vacuum or sweep up material and place in a suitable disposal container. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.
7.) HANDLING/STORAGE
Usage Precautions: Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Use with adequate ventilation.
Usage Descriptions:
Storage Precautions: Keep from contact with oxidizing materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Dark room.
Handling Precautions:
8.) EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION
